What is Responsible Gambling?

Using low risk strategies while gambling to reduce harm including:

  • Set a budget & stick to it
  • Set time limits & take breaks
  • Gamble for entertainment & if it’s not fun stop playing
  • Understand how the games work including odds
  • Avoid gambling when upset or frustrated
  • Limit or avoid alcohol or other substances while gambling
  • Balance gambling with other activities.

If gambling is no longer fun, reach out! Voluntary Self-Exclusion options are available for those looking to decrease or stop gambling for a chosen length of time.

The Problem Gambling Helpline provides free, immediate, culturally and linguistically relevant support and referral assistance, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to individuals, family members, and others that have been adversely affected by gambling related harm. An alternative to calling the Helpline is the free online chat, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Phone Helpline

The Problem Gambling Helpline serves these main functions for the gambler and/or family member who calls.

To refer or provide information to problem gamblers and concerned significant others to appropriate resources that include:

  • Problem Gambling Services/Better Choice treatment programs in the geographical area of the caller.
  • Gamblers Anonymous and Gam-Anon meetings or other self-help groups.
  • Literature about problem gambling.
  • Other State Helplines or Affiliate Councils of the National Council on Problem Gambling.
  • Other relevant community resources as deemed appropriate for meeting the caller’s needs.

Online Chat

  • CCPG.ORG/CHAT: Chat is open 24 hours, 7 days a week.
  • Chat specialists have expertise in problem gambling.
  • Chat provides emotional support and referrals for individuals, family members, and others that have been adversely affected by gambling related harm.
  • Chats are confidential and can be anonymous.
  • Links chat visitors to local treatment service.
